Set a budget and actually keep it
Create a monthly budget in Tase, log spending in two-second voice entries, and check what is left by asking. The version of budgeting that survives real life.
Budgets do not fail in the setup step. They fail three weeks later, when logging expenses has become a chore and checking the budget has become a guilt trip. This walkthrough sets up the low-friction version: categories that match how you actually spend, two-second voice logging, and answers on demand instead of monthly autopsies.
- 1
Start with four categories, not fourteen
In the Finance tab, create budgets for the few categories where money actually leaks: usually eating out, groceries, shopping, and fun. Rent and utilities do not need a budget; they need a reminder. Fine-grained categories feel rigorous but multiply the bookkeeping until you quit. - 2
Set amounts from last month, not from hope
Look at what you actually spent last month and set each budget slightly below it. A budget 40 percent below reality fails by week two and takes your motivation with it. Shave 10 percent, win the month, then tighten. - 3
Log by voice at the moment you pay
This is the habit that decides everything: as you walk away from the register, say "Spent 18 dollars on lunch" or "Groceries, 92 dollars". The entry lands in the right category with today’s date. Two seconds, no app-hunting, works with your hands full. - 4
Ask before you spend
The budget becomes real the first time it changes a decision. Deciding on dinner? Ask "How much is left in eating out?" Hearing "43 dollars for the next 9 days" while choosing the restaurant is the entire point of budgeting, delivered at the only moment it matters. - 5
Do a two-minute month-end reset
At the end of the month, glance at which categories burst and by how much, adjust next month’s numbers toward reality, and move on. No spreadsheets, no shame session. The budget is a dial you tune, not a test you pass.
Catch the invisible spending
Phrases that work
- "Spent 12 fifty at the pharmacy."
- "Add a 60 dollar expense for gas this week."
- "How much have I spent on eating out this month?"
- "What is left in my shopping budget?"
Give it one honest month. The surprise is rarely that you spend too much everywhere; it is that the leak is one or two specific categories, and once you can see them in real time, they mostly fix themselves.
Budgeting that answers back
Set a budget once, log spending by voice, and ask Tase what is left before you buy.
